Challenge Henley wins Beyond Going Long ‘Race of the Year’ 2013
Last year TriReview had the pleasure (apart from the hills!) of completing the Challenge Henley Half Iron-distance race. We thought it was a well-run event with a gorgeous course and great support and it seems we weren’t the only ones!
Challenge Henley has been awarded ‘2013 Race of the Year’ by readers of long distance triathlon website, Beyond Going Long.
Over 2000 votes were cast as readers of the website voted for their favourite event from the 2013 race season, and Challenge Henley was the clear winner, with 50.27% of the total vote.
Alan Rose, Race Director of Challenge UK said,
‘We are truly honoured to accept this award and would like to thank everyone who voted for us, and the thousands of athletes that have supported Challenge Henley over the past three years.’
The award will come as a sweet success for Alan and his Challenge UK team who had to fight against a local backlash to the event in the lead up to the weekend. Speaking to a local newspaper at the time Mr Rose said: “It is no secret that the MP, Mayor and various councillors in Henley and the surrounding parishes have made it extremely clear that we are not welcome in Henley.”
Perhaps because of all the trouble, Challenge UK is relocating it’s iron and half iron distance event to Weymouth as of this summer which will no doubt be a great venue.
Another popular long distance event that came second in the poll was Outlaw – reviewed by TriReview here. This tough race received 31.88% of the vote.
