As all the athletes descended on Wimbleball Lake, Exmoor ahead of tomorrow’s IRONMAN 70.3 UK, today it was the IRONKIDS who took all the glory as they kicked off the weekend’s racing in perfect sunny conditions.
This inaugural IRONKIDS race at Exmoor, is the first of 3 events to be held over the season which will see some 3,000 kids aged 3-14 get a taste for the sport and be part of the action of a World Class IRONMAN event.
The children ran a variety of distances according to their age, from 500m with a parent for the 3 year olds up to a 2km run trail run around the lake for the 14 year olds, but all competitors finished under the iconic IRONMAN finish arch.
Following today’s conditions, the water temperature has continued to rise to an almost balmy 18.9 degrees, which will be a welcome start for the athletes as they take the plunge into Wimbleball Lake at 7am for their 1.2 mile swim. They will then embark on a 56 mile bike course before setting off on a 13.1 half marathon around the lake, cheered on by the thousands of spectators.
