In a release today they said:

IRONMAN® 70.3® UK Exmoor enters a new chapter in its history books on Sunday 25th June as organisers have confirmed that 2017 will be the last edition of this iconic IRONMAN 70.3 event.

In 2006 triathletes took the initial plunge in Wimbleball Lake in the heart of Exmoor’s spectacular country park; the event has seen over 20,000 athletes tackle this challenging course to cross the finish line victoriously.

When the event stepped onto the triathlon calendar in 2006, it became the world’s first IRONMAN 70.3 – consisting of a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike and 13.1-mile run – athletes had the opportunity to step up from short course triathlon and challenge themselves, many with the ultimate goal of finishing an IRONMAN.

Kevin Stewart, IRONMAN EMEA Regional Director, commented: “IRONMAN 70.3 UK Exmoor has been an integral part of the development of IRONMAN over the last decade. Athletes have loved its unique event setting, however its remote location has brought about recent logistical challenges. We have therefore made the decision to make 2017 the last year to stage and celebrate this historic IRONMAN 70.3 UK event. We encourage and welcome everyone who wants to be part of its history to join us in Wimbleball on 25th June.

The event starts with at swim the majestic Wimbleball Lake, nestled in the hills of Exmoor’s National Park. From here athletes embark on a two-lap hilly bike course taking in the unique landscape of Exmoor’s moorland, before returning to the picturesque Wimbleball setting for a three lap mixed-terrain run course around the lake.

This will be an age-group only event, as athletes compete for one of 35 qualifying slots to the 2017 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship. In addition, there will also be the opportunity for tri clubs to qualify for the IRONMAN 70.3 EMEA Tri Club Championship.

The race weekend will commence on Saturday 25th June at 3pm with an IRONKIDS fun run for children aged 3-14 followed by a 5km IRONGIRL run.
