I really feel like the training has started now. Hit a lake for proper open water swim training and now it’s getting serious.
I went with a good friend of mine, Matt, who is a bloody good swimmer. As, the video below shows, I’ve got a lot of work to do!
Matt has pointed out something really important for me.
I’m only 6 weeks out now til the race and my technique is never going to improve at this late stage, it’s all about pushing myself harder in these big open water swims to see how quick I can go.
My 12 week training programme (just one out of a magazine) has definitely helped me focus in the pool with hard mixed-speed sessions but now I need to let rip in the lakes and seas.
Anyway, overall I’m really pleased with how everything’s going.
The training is no doubt having a strain on family life but my wife is being really supportive and so far we’ve stayed relatively argument free! But these monster 5hr bike rides are proving to me that this is definitely one of the most selfish sports out there in terms of time it takes to get ready!
Another swim session in the lake tonight. Wish me luck!
P.S – this is how hard I’m pushing it in the gym on the bike! Just need to do the equivalent in open water!
